London City Guide
With Joe Onyuma
I run because I love to live a life where my choices are limitless. I can eat/ drink whatever I like, try whatever sport I want and feel full of energy each day.
5 Questions with Joe
1) What’s your proudest moment in running?
The ongoing dedication it takes to keep fit…. it's clear when you’re not putting in the work!
2) What do you love most about your local running community?
I love how accessible it is and how so many new people are giving it a try and finding steps to live a more active and healthy life. They also make new friends along the way.
3) How do you stay motivated during tough trainings/races?
I do find this quite difficult sometimes, I just think of those who have suffered a lot more and put into perspective that it’s a blessing to be able to have the choice to go on a run. Not everybody has that privilege and when it’s taken away from you, you realise that. I had spinal surgery when I was 15 and had to stay in bed for months and I think of how much I couldn’t wait to get moving again during that time.
4) What's the biggest challenge you've faced in your running journey?

The City
London has been my adopted home since I moved down from the country suburbs at age 20. I’ve always loved exploring the city which started through my passion for art where I’d spend time exploring the city while sketching and taking photos for my projects at school. It’s a city that incubates amazing talent across a bunch of different spaces which makes it a special place to spend time growing as a human.
Run Routes
-
Battersea Park
It’s a simple choice, but I really enjoy running in Battersea Park. The paths are wide and flat, making it perfect for a smooth run. Plus, the beautiful scenery keeps me engaged, even on longer runs.
-
River Thames
I also love running anywhere along the River Thames, especially on a crisp sunny morning in winter or a warm summer evening at sunset. Whether on the north or south side, the views are unbeatable and always make the run feel special.

Workout & Recovery
Ice bath at local gym
I occasionally jump in an ice bath at my gym … I need to improve my recovery habits to be honest!
